Don’t forget, Pool #2 closes Sunday evening. If 7/2 holds up, the field is a viable option considering how great AWESOME ACT looked winning the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct. He should be a top contender in the Wood Memorial. Additionally, ALPHIE’S BET won the Sham and MAKE MUSIC FOR ME won the Pasadena Stakes on the turf. They’ll probably race next in the Santa Anita Derby.

Awesome Act raced well, but beat a suspect field. The Sham as I thought really didn’t tell us much except that the best California-based three-year-olds are either racing next week or have departed east for New Mexico, Hot Springs, New York or Meydan. Even though it has worked recently for Street Sense, Big Brown and Mine That Bird – I still don’t like the two-race prep and believe it’s destroyed Buddy’s Saint’s chances already.

But what the heck do I know – I only had one out of four in yesterday’s all turf pick four at Gulfstream….

I will place small Future Wagers on Rule, Sidney’s Candy and maybe just two bucks on Jackson’s Bend – let’s call it the Zito factor.

    Tony,
Good analysis on your blog of Pool #2; though i’m not completely sold on RULE just yet. I guess Pletcher’s bound to win sometime so it might be him.

I didn’t take a plunge into Pool #2, but there are two here that have particularly attractive odds: TEMPTED TO TAPIT (63-1) and JACKSON BEND (47-1). In hindsight I wished I would’ve put a few bucks on JACKSON BEND since Zito certainly knows how to win in May.

Frankly speaking this is an awful lineup. I think I can reliably toss half the field without a second thought.

Most notably Jackson Bend did not progress in his second start of the year. He’s peaked and may only go down in form from here. Tempted To Tapit didn’t do much at the Fair Grounds and count turn out to be a winter track horse and nothing more.

Vale of York? Hasn’t done well this spring abroad and still has not run on the dirt yet. Connemara at some point has to stop being babied on synths. But I think he’s going to fall way short on a dirt track.

Looking at this list again, far too much emphasis on the westerners. The Field at 3/1 seems like a good play for those who are holding a C-note on that.

    TKS,
It crossed my mind to drop a C-note on the field, but thought better of it. Probably the best bet on the board so maybe I should’ve.

I think JACKSON BEND might have a shot in the Derby if he stays healthy. After dominating at Calder, he hasn’t disgraced himself at GP in two of the tougher Derby preps to date. Because he didn’t win at least he’ll be at a bet-able price. He’s got tactical speed and should be well conditioned. Not a sure thing by any stretch, but some things to like.

I’m one of the first ones to doubt the westerners, but horses coming off pro-ride are fairing pretty well 1st time on God’s own.

It’s surprising that Rule has better odds than Buddy’s Saint, Dublin and Caracortado. He’s on an impressive winning streak that has taken place all on the dirt, not that I think he’s the best by a long shot, I’m just surprised. 20-1 seems like a mistake.
D’Funnybone at 38-1 looks like one of the best potentials on the board, along with Conveyance and Connemara.
