The rules: each contestant picks a horse in all 14 races on the Haskell day card for a mythical $2 WPS wager. Whoever finishes with the highest bankroll at the end of the day wins. Pretty simple, huh?
Grand prize is a VIP trip & tickets to the 2010 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs.
Second prize is VIP trip & tickets to the 2011 Haskell Invitational
Third prize is a set of steak knives. No, it’s really just a gift pack, but maybe it’ll include steak knives.
This probably isn’t a game where playing the chalk will do much good so you’ll need to dope out some bombs.
Good luck if you play!
Here’s my stab at the Challenge. Fee free to add your own picks.

Nice Glengarry Glen Ross reference….

Good catch, I wondered if anyone would notice. Glengarry has some great lines.

Monmouth Park has been gung ho on these $2 Across The Board contests. I wonder where they got that idea.
It’s forces people to handicap the entire Sunday race card.
So…
Expect the all-time Haskell Day handle record to fall tomorrow.

TKS,
Great point; a free contest like the Haskell Challenge entices thousands to handicap the card. And if people take the time to handicap the entire card, they’ll likely bet those races. Smart marketing.

I threw my picks up there. I really need to be right when it comes to race 5 to have a chance to win.
Hopefully we’re tied for the lead after Race 2!

Tencent,
Thnx for being a good sport. And w/ Cool Coal Man’s 2nd place finish you’ve taken the lead.
I was thinking that if my “Survival at the Shore” form holds i’ll probably get three to show and maybe one to place.

My picks were so bad that it was fitting that the my pick in the last race ran LAST.

Chris, my picks were horrible too. After losing the first four races i asked my wife who she liked in the 5th. Taking a break from watching America’s next top model reruns, she looks at the DRF for about 2 mins then says #9 Teaks North. I put a $2 show bet on the 9 to give her a rooting interest. Of course, he wins to pay $62 while the show bet pays $9. And i feel like a complete horse’s ass!

Steve,
I’m sorry I missed the chance to weigh in…didn’t have much time and only put in picks for the TBA picks since Handride e-mailed.
How ’bout this…before leaving Las Vegas, I was passing the time at a race book catching races from ~ 12:30 until I Ieft disgusted at around 2:30. I was waiting to bet the farm on WINSLOW HOMER in the Jim Dandy and found the 7th an intriguing race to play against the winner.
I zeroed in on two, ECONOMIC SWOON and ARCODORO. I liked the former better, played him to win, ARCODORO P/S, and boxed the two in exacta. YIKES! Missed out on a $90 winner!
I didn’t bother to check the entries, handicapping off the Form. I figured there was no way WINSLOW HOMER wouldn’t go in the Jim Dandy. I step up to bet a rather large DD w/ PROVISO/FOREVER TOGETHER w/ 12-1 morning line WINSLOW and the colt to win. I found out that HOMER was scratched, didn’t make another bet, choosing to get back to the airport ASAP.
So, I felt a little of the pain you had w/ TEAKS NORTH.
Better fortune awaits us next time. It all averages out, right
?

AmCap,
Ahhh Vegas! I really need to to get back there sometime. I hope you had a great time.
I don’t know about you, but I’m getting pretty sore from all the times I’ve been kicking myself lately. It probably does average out in the end, but guess it’s human nature to dwell on those “now why didn’t I . . .!” moments.
More good racing & betting this weekend!
