Scatman Aristides

For ThoroFan’s Handicapper’s Corner Dylan J. previewed Saturday’s Grade 3 Aristides Stakes. It only drew five entries so Churchill Downs made it Race 5 to keep it out of their Pick 6.  That doesn’t mean it won’t be an exciting race, so here’s Dylan’s take (also printed at ThoroFan):

The Aristides at Churchill will be run for the 25th time this Saturday and while it may lack a large field, it does not lack in competitiveness. Most of the field comes out of the same allowance run on the derby undercard.

#1 ROTHKO (9/5), #2 SCATMAN (5/2) and #5 JASIZZLE (3-1) all battled one another and were within 2 ½ lengths, but neither of them won that allowance race. My knock on ROTHKO is he failed to really make a true run last time into a pace that was blistering. His best races have come when on the lead and while he has speed to get involved, I don’t think he’s quick enough to clear and maybe involved in a speed duel if they decide to go from the gate. #4 GOOD LORD (3-1) is one to hit the board (10/20), but his best efforts have been going longer which will make this task that much more difficult. JASIZZLE was coming late and lost by a head last time at 18-1. When a horse jumps up with a huge performance, I’m always weary next time out, as it could have been fluky and or he might bounce. He has a chance, but I’ll let him beat me.

My pick to win is SCATMAN. He was gaining late last time and the time before was five wide and finished a good 3rd. He just seems like the most consistent of this group and the likely pace scenario should set it up perfectly. You can make a case for any of the 5 entered and should be a great quarter century renewal of the Aristides.

Good Luck!
